Tim Zijlstra

Software Developer
There are limits placed on your ideas, and there is space to properly structure and devise a project the way you want. This freedom means a lot to me.
  1. Tim, you joined us as our new colleague at HTG after your graduation internship. How did that come about?

The first thing I did after my internship was take a vacation! A few weeks later, I heard from the IT manager at HTG. While looking for a job, I realized that it was quite difficult to start work without specific professional experience, so I was really glad that HTG got in touch again.

  2. Can you tell us a bit more about your role?

That’s a difficult question! My tasks, duties and work activities can vary a lot. My role is Software Engineer, which means I develop applications alongside our general BIT package. This could also include applications for process optimization. Right now, I am mainly involved in these types of optimization processes, such as an application to input purchase quotations. The aim is to be able to analyse the purchase quotations and use this analysis to let the purchasers know about interesting products. As such, being a Software Engineer at HTG means I don’t just work on standalone applications, but I really help the business to advance. My work is always part of a project.

  3. According to you, what is required to be a good Software Developer?

As a Software Developer, you always want to search for new developments and possibilities, and I like to spend time on this outside of work too. My experience has taught me that this is almost as important as formal education. Because of the many questions from within the organization and the variety of projects, it is important to be structured in the way you work.

  4. What do you like best about working at HTG?

The fact that the company wants to progress. There are limits placed on your ideas, and there is space to properly structure and devise a project the way you want. This freedom means a lot to me. I have also noticed that the work I do has an impact on the business, and that is motivating too!

  5. Are there any plans and projects for the future you are looking forward to?

I am looking forward to our web development. It will make a significant difference to our company. We will make as much use of the very latest technologies as possible. One of the main advantages is that it will enable our colleagues around the world to use the applications quickly. We are also in the process of setting up a development team at our location in Dubai. I will also be going there soon to help two new colleagues settle in. There’s no set date yet, but I am really looking forward to my visit!
